Functional Safety

Safety Engineered In.
Not Bolted On.

Functional safety ensures your equipment performs safely even when components fail. We conduct formal studies, perform SISTEMA calculations, and produce the documentation to prove it — to the standard required.

What Is Functional Safety?

Active Protection
Against Failure.

Functional safety actively prevents the failure of a system from causing harm to people and the environment. It achieves this through electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic technology — either maintaining a safe state or moving the system to one.

This is not a tick-box exercise. It is a structured engineering discipline that starts at concept and runs through to validation.

What We Do — ISO 13849

The Safety Lifecycle

Define Safety Function Requirements — identify all safety-related functions and their required behaviour.

Determine Required Performance Level (PL) — risk assessment to establish the required PLr for each safety function.

Design and Technically Implement the Safety Functions — hardware, software, and architecture selection to meet PLr.

Determine and Quantitatively Evaluate the Achieved Performance Level — SISTEMA calculations and component data verification.

Verification — confirm the achieved PL meets or exceeds the required PL for each safety function.

Validation — test and confirm the complete safety system performs as designed under all relevant conditions.

// Tools

SISTEMA v2.1+ for PL calculations. Allen-Bradley GuardLogix / Safety I/O. Safety PLCs and safety-rated field devices throughout.

Standards

Standards We Work To

//

ISO 13849

Machine Safety — Safety-Related Parts of Control Systems. Primary standard for functional safety on machinery.

//

ISA Standards

Instrument Society of America standards for instrumentation and automation in process industries.

//

Relevant Australian Standards

AS/NZS standards applicable to the specific machinery type, industry sector, and installation environment.

//

IEC 61508 (reference)

Functional Safety of Electrical/Electronic/Programmable Electronic Safety-related Systems — reference for software and hardware requirements.

Not Optional. Not Negotiable.

Functional safety is a legal and commercial requirement across Australian industry. Getting it right protects people, protects the business, and protects you.

01
Required for machinery sold or operated in Australia under WHS regulations
02
Reduces liability and insurance exposure — documented proof matters when incidents occur
03
Required by most mining and major industrial site operators as a condition of entry
04
Documented proof of compliance for audits, regulatory bodies, and post-incident investigations
// Don't guess on safety
